POETRY
The Many Voices of Poetry
Teenagers often find their poetic voice while going
through body and life changes. Poetry is of and from
the heart and most, if not all, people write some poetry
as verse or prose. Poetry allows us to stand back and
study ourselves, our friends, the wonders of nature,
life, and love. Many work through their problems by
expressing themselves with the written word.
The internet is making it possible for hundreds if not
thousands of people to publish their poetry for the first
time. They are proud of what they have written and
believe it may help others. Poetry is far from dead.
We all think of rhyming poetry when poetry is
mentioned but there are different forms of poetry. Most
poetry is highly structured but what is now called
creative poetry is the mainstay of poets. Not just lines
of unconnected thoughts but all with a theme in mind.
It makes a person think things through and put
together what seems to be somewhat disjointed
sentences. Punctuation is not key to this form of
poetry. A recent Pulitzer Prize winner used only words
without sentences or punctuation. He was brilliant of
course and not all of us can do this. We all think in
sentences with a beginning and end.
Robert Frost found poetry in many things, nature most
of all. He wrote one of his most famous poems about
trees, their grandeur and beauty. Nature is the purest
form of poetry to me. The symmetry of a mountain, the
snow falling on the ground, the wind blowing through
trees, a cascading waterfall, the ocean with its many
shades of blue, the sun sparkling on water, the stars
sparkling in the heavens, the stark beauty of a
Louisiana bayou, the warm beauty of a desert, the
sound of rain on a roof. I could go on and on but I will
let you think about it yourself. Find the beauty in your
surroundings, no matter what they may be.

for just a little while.
Few are altogether deaf to the preaching
of pine trees. Their sermons
onthe mountains go to our hearts; and if
people in general could be got
into the woods, even for once, to hear
the trees speak for themselves, all
difficulties in the way of forest
preservation would vanish. -John
Muir,naturalist, explorer, and writer
(1838-1914)
The belief in the possibility of a short
decisive war appears to be one
of the most ancient and dangerous of
human illusions. -Robert Lynd, writer
(1879-1949)
