| A police station in Al Nassiryiah, Iraq came under fire November 12, 2003. Eighteen Italian para-military police were killed, eight Iraqi policemen were killed, and as many as thirty people injured, some critically. The Italians said it will not deter them from their mission in helping us make Iraq safe for its citizens and their future as a country free from oppression and free to make their own decisions in the future. God bless the Italians and thank you for your unwavering support of our troops and misson in Iraq. |
The Department of Defense announced today the deaths of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom. Sgt. Joseph Minucci II, 23, of Richeyville, Pa, was killed on Nov. 13 in Samara, Iraq. Minucci was riding on a bus when an improvised explosive device exploded. Minucci died of his injuries. Minucci was assigned to C Company, 2nd Battalion (Airborne), 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade, Camp Ederle, Italy. Spc. Marlon P. Jackson, 25, of Jersey City, N.J., was killed on Nov. 11 in Tampa, Iraq. Jackson died of injuries sustained when an improvised explosive device exploded on the road. Jackson was assigned to A Company, 94th Engineer Battalion (Combat) (Heavy), 130th Engineer Brigade, Vilseck, Germany. November 16, 2003 Spc. Irving Medina, 22, of Middletown, N.Y., was killed on Nov.14 in Baghdad, Iraq. Medina was traveling in a convoy when it struck an improvised explosive device. Medina was assigned to 4th Battalion, 1st Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, Fort Riley, Kan. The soldiers were killed on Nov. 15 when two 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters crashed in Mosul, Iraq. Killed were: Sgt. Michael D. Acklin II, 25, of Louisville, Ky. Acklin was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Spc. Ryan T. Baker, 24, of Brown Mills, N.J. Baker was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Spc. William D. Dusenbery, 30, of Fairview Heights, Ill. Dusenbery was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Sgt. Warren S. Hansen, 36, of Clintonville, Wis. Hansen was assigned to the 9th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Spc. Eugene A. Uhl III, 21, of Amherst, Wis. Uhl was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 320th Field Artillery, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. There are twelve additional fatalities from this incident pending next of kin notification. Wolfe was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 101st Aviation Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Hayslett, 26, of Newville, Pa., was killed on Nov. 15 in Baghdad, Iraq. Hayslett was conducting a patrol when struck by an improvised explosive device. He died of his injuries. Hayslett was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 37th Armored Regiment, 1st Armored Division, based in Friedberg, Germany. | November 13, 2003 Pfc. Rayshawn S. Johnson, 20, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was killed on Nov. 3, 2003, in Tikrit, Iraq. Johnson was on patrol when his vehicle hit a landmine. The soldier died as a result of his injuries. Johnson was assigned to the 299th Engineer Battalion, 4th Infantry Division (Mech), based in Fort Hood, Texas. Spc. Robert A. Wise, 21, of Tallahassee, Fla., was killed on Nov. 12 in Baghdad, Iraq. Wise was on a mounted patrol when an improvised explosive device exploded. | November 15, 2003 Release Number: 03-11-23 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 17 KILLED, 5 WOUNDED, AND 1 UNACCOUNTED FOR IN BLACK HAWK CRASHES IN MOSUL MOSUL, Iraq (15 November, 2003) - Two UH – 60 Black hawk helicopters assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) crashed in West Mosul at approximately 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15. 17 soldiers died in the crash, 5 were wounded, and 1 is unaccounted for. The wounded have been evacuated to the 21st Combat Support Hospital at the Mosul Airfield. One aircraft was carrying an aerial quick reaction force; the other was carrying soldiers on a transport mission within the Northern Iraq area of operations at the time of the crashes. The aircraft impacted approximately 250 meters from each other in a residential neighborhood. The pilots of both aircraft were qualified in limited-visibility flight operations with Night Vision Goggles. Soldiers from the 101st have secured the crash sites; Iraqi police and Iraqi firefighters are also on the scene. The leaders and soldiers of the 101st extend deepest sympathies and condolences to the family members and friends of the dead and injured. The 101st remains committed to accomplishing its mission of maintaining a safe and secure environment in Northern Iraq so that reconstruction and establishment of governmental institutions can go forward. The quick, joint response by 101st and Iraqi emergency units is a tribute to US-Iraqi teamwork and the progress achieved in the region. The cause of the incident is under investigation. Names of the deceased will be released once next-of-kin notification is complete. November 15, 2003 Release Number: 03-11-22 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 101ST AIRBORNE DIVISION (AIR ASSAULT) BLACKHAWK HELICOPTERS CRASH IN WEST MOSUL MOSUL, Iraq (15 November, 2003) - Two UH – 60 Blackhawk helicopters assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) crashed in West Mosul at approximately 6:30 p.m. today. The status of the crewmembers and passengers is unknown at this time. The crash sites are currently secured by soldiers from the 101st, Iraqi police and Iraqi firefighters. The cause of the incident is under investigation. November 16, 2003 Release Number: 03-11-25 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Update to Release 03-11-23: 17 KILLED, 5 WOUNDED IN BLACK HAWK CRASHES IN MOSUL MOSUL, Iraq - Two UH–60 Black Hawk helicopters assigned to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) crashed in western Mosul at approximately 6:30 p.m. Nov. 15. All soldiers involved in the accident were accounted for. Seventeen soldiers died in the crash and five were wounded. The casualty information in this release is an updated version of CENTCOM Release 03-11-23. The wounded soldiers were evacuated to the 21st Combat Support Hospital at the Mosul Airfield. The cause of the incident is under investigation. The soldiers’ names are being withheld pending next-of-kin notification. |
